Lodging Info
Since the wedding and reception will be held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Kohala Coast some people may choose to stay there. You can visit their website by clicking here. We have a special room rate for everyone attending the wedding of $209 per night. Please mention the wedding of Deanna and Kevin on September 23rd to get the rate. They also have a thing called Dolphin Quest (click here) , where you can sign up to swim with the dolphins! You can also watch them for free if you want.
Many people are staying in Kona, about 40-45 min from the Hilton Waikoloa Kona is a great little town with lots of fun things to do, well provide more information on places to go/things to do.
We know people who have used Sunquest vacation rentals and been very happy with them. They have a variety of places to rent and can be found by clicking here.
One place that we have stayed that is pretty much your typical hotel room, but is priced very reasonably and has nice views of the water with a location very close to town is the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. (click here). www.orbitz.com (click here) has them as low as $105 a night or $115 a night with every 5th night free.
Another great location/low price option is the Royal Kona Resort. Orbitz.com has rooms there at $96/night with some special offers like 5th night free or free ocean room upgrades. Check for details, they may be limited time offers.
There are lots of other places to get vacation rentals from so feel free to search your favorite sites or talk to your travel agent, just be sure NOT to book a place on Oahu. When people say the Big Island often people confuse that for Oahu where Waikiki Beach is.
Kohala Coast: The big advantage to staying on the Kohala coast is that there are great beaches, all inclusive resorts and great golf. Some of the great beaches include Mauna Kea, Hapuna and Spencer Beaches among others. They have big resorts like the one we are getting married at; the Four Seasons and more. There are great places to shop and eat at these resorts. Since all of these resorts are pretty fancy, the price can be higher sometimes. They are close to world-class golf, courses including Mauna Kea, Hapuna Golf Course, Mauna Lani Resort, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Hualalai Golf Course and the Waikoloa Village Golf Club among others. The Kohala Coast is further away from Kona, 30 minutes to an hour away depending on what beach/resort. It can sometimes pretty windy at times out on the Kohala Coast but it is very nice out there!
Kona (aka Kailua-Kona): Kona has great restaurants and several to choose from. Most of the activities center around Kona, whether you are renting a Harley or moped, parasailing, chartering a fishing boat, glass bottom boating, going on a sunset booze cruise, going on a snorkel trip or even some golfing. There are beaches here too, but they tend to be smaller. Not the huge crescent beaches that you see in the magazines, those are on the Kohala Coast. Still they are a lot of fun, There is a GREAT snorkel beach here, Kahalu'u Beach Park that we really like where you are guaranteed to see tons of tropical fish and probably a turtle or two in a nice barrier protected area. Kona has lots of fun little shops and sights too. There are lots of Condos, houses and hotels to stay at in Kona and they tend to be cheaper than the Kohala Coast. The weather here is almost always calm and nice because it is on the leeward side of the island and is protected from the afternoon trade winds that sometimes will happen on the Kohala Coast. You will get an occasional afternoon shower, but it never lasts for long and usually feels pretty nice! One neat thing, if it is windy on the Kohala Coast, you can drive to Kona and it will likely be perfectly calm! We love this town and have never stayed anywhere else, so we are probably a bit biased when suggesting where to stay on the big island. But the big resorts on the Kohala coast are very nice too; it just depends on what you are into.
